What does Big Idea look like? on PhotoPeach

Sometimes you might wonder what an afternoon looks like in our learning centre. These photos are from one of Big idea sessions this afternoon. Lots of planning, designing, assembling, reconstructing and explaining going on, as well as loads of cooperation, collaboration and communication. In a word, a busy, productive and exciting place to be.

  3. A visit by our resident geologist

    August 15, 2013 by mmurnane

Genevieve and Leah with the fool’s gold

This week we made two big discoveries at St Therese. We discovered that Jacqui was a geologist and that fools gold was called pyrite. Jacqui came over from the prep room, to talk to a group of our students, about rocks, gold, mining, tectonic plates and other amazing geological facts. She kept the listeners captivated for a full 45 minutes and was able to answer loads of burning questions which have been generated by our Big Idea this term. So far, our Big Idea has been focused on the Australian Gold Rushes. One of the facts she told us, was that the deepest mine in the world is 3.9 km deep in South Africa. The rocks down at this depth are 52 degrees and the mine has to be air conditioned. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us Jacqui, in such an interesting way.

  5. Welcome back – term 3 starts with a sizzle

    July 14, 2013 by mmurnane

Welcome back to the second semester – terms 3 and 4 for 2013. Term 3 begins with a sizzle as we head to Sovereign Hill on Wednesday. This trip kicks off our Big Idea for term 3 which has as its essential question, What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped Australia? Check out the different units or topics you will get to select from, for your Big Idea this term.

Then on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of week 2, the year 5’s head to Camp Wilkin in Anglesea, for our annual year 5 camp. Ms Larkin and Mrs Smith will stay back with the year 6 students, who will be taking part in a tree planting excursion on that Tuesday. In spite of what ever the weather wishes to dish up for us that week, we will have a ball.

So, welcome back and remember to Be Kind, Stay Safe and Learn Well. We have some exciting other events this term as well, but let’s just concentrate on Sovereign Hill and the year 5 camp for starters.
