  • Collect compound words from books – mark where the words join
  • Collect words with the same letter patterns or same sounds
  • Make lists of words ending in: ed, ing, er, est…….
  • Make as many words as possible from a base word eg. soft, softer, softest, softly.
  • Investigate rules of contractions – write the two words, then write as a contraction
  • Investigate spelling patterns such as ough, ear, our, eigh, ie, ei
  • Investigate words ending in ‘e’ – how do we say them, what happens when we add endings?

Filming Groups

Your job is to entertain the Year 1 & 2 students at St.Therese by writing and making a film.

We will start by interviewing the Year 1 & 2’s and find out what their interests are and what they would like to see in a film.

You will then, with your groups write and edit a script to create a short film. Each student needs to have a speaking part. The film needs to be between 3 and 5 minutes. There needs to be some music and some special effects. Your film needs to be free of Violence

Filming needs to be finished by the end of week 8.

During week 10, there will be a film festival, run by you for the Year 1 & 2 classes.

What is inference? 

Inference is understanding implicit information. It is fundamental to understanding most written texts. It requires the reader to unravel the implied meaning of words.

Les Carolyn

The writer and historian reflects on the difference between the mythical and real stories on the first day, and how crucial elements of Australian identity emerged during the war, as well as the lack of help given ANZAC soldiers returning to Australia after the war.

Les Carlyon, AC, is an Australian writer born in northern Victoria in 1942. He has been editor of Melbourne’s journal of record, The Age, as well as editor-in-chief of The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd. His book “Gallipoli, a popular history of the Allied Gallipoli Campaign in the Dardanelles during the First World War”, was published in 2001, and met with critical and commercial success in Australia, New Zealand and England. The Great War, published in 2006, is the story of Australian forces on the Western Front in France and Belgium also during World War I.


Gary Oakley

Gary Oakley is the president of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans and Services Association of Australia, and has worked at the Australian War Memorial from 1991. In 2009 at the time of this interview he was appointed the Memorial’s first Indigenous liaison officer in order to advance the knowledge of indigenous involvement in Australian Military history. In this interview Gary talks about the presence of indigenous soldiers at Gallipoli and WW1 generally, what conscription meant for them and the post war challenges they faced as returned veterans.

Heal the World- Song



This is a picture book  from 2008 – a poignant and necessary story of an ordinary Australian family who find themselves in the midst of a war, and as refugees, are placed in a detention camp. The book is heartbreaking, and older kids should read it. Yes, it will make them upset. Yes, it will make them ask questions. It will shock them like Anne Frank’s diary shocked me when I first read it in Year 4. But it is different to the shock registered from a bit of violence in a movie, or even war images on TV. It is not a fast, look away, type of experience. It has the potential to open their minds, and ours, as older readers. Or for parents, imagining if it were their child, their family.

The book is effective for a couple of reasons. One is John Marsden’s ability to get inside the mind of an adolescent. The book is a series of diary entries by a fifteen year-old, casually describing his family’s quirks, and their life, then sadly recalling the events as they unfold. There are reminiscences ofTomorrow When the War Began and its sequels, but it obviously parallels the current situation of detained refugees in Australia, who have fled from war-torn countries. The story is about empathy. The second striking aspect is shiver-inducing illustrations by Matt Ottley. Some pages are scribbles from family members. Others are dark renderings of a world turned asunder: the family, skeletal, around a table; the ocean; a stern guard, bearing down.

This is a disturbing, moving, and as I mentioned necessary picture book.

A snapshot is a descriptive piece of writing using figurative language and commas to develop a highly visible picture in their readers’ heads. Use similes (and metaphors) to associate an image with a meaning and play on the senses to engage their readers in what they have written.

    that video really made me think and i think that sometimes the gouverment can be a bit greedy and destroying the barrier reef could kill thousnds of species of fish. i dont think the should be destroying the reef for gold.

    I think that it should continue because Australians need money and we need jobs and anyway we have animals on land so we can eat those ones and who likes fish anyway. We just opened it so we should give it a chance but if it gets to out of control than I say NO! Also family’s need the money.

    I think they should mine down on land nere the Great Barrier Reef and then mine across. So they are not damaging the reef but they are mining under it. Because then all the fish might die and some species could become exctinct

    for a book i would recomend percy jakson the lighting theif it is a great adventure book with lots of action and twists that will keep you reading all day. it is about a boy called percy who gets kicked out of school each year. All of his trouble starts when he accidently Vaporizes his maths teacher and his mom has no choice to send him to summer camp but this is no nomarl summer camp it full of gods.

    I think they shouldn’t mine so close to the Great Barrier Reef. it is one of australias most famous icons, it has so many different spices of sea life. If the Great Barrier Reef gets destroied lots of the sea life will be killed. Even the different spices of sea life we haven’t found out yet will be destroyed. This is why I Disagree with the mining so close to the Great Barrier Reef.

    I think it’s not a good idea for the government to destroy the Great Barrier Reef because, it’s a beautiful place to go and visit and, there are a lot of fish, turttles, sharks and a lot of coral so if they destroy it it will all be gone and no one will be able to visit it ever again.

    I have a cousin living in Gladstone, he said he has to drive 1 hour away to swim. He also said it’s so polluted he can’t even put his feet in the water. Why do they need to destroy one of Australia’s wonders. Donovan

    I think that it is not a good idea because lots of people visit the great barrier reef and if it is not there people will not come to queenland and stay.

    I think they should NOT mine so close to the GREAT BARRIER REEF. Because the Barrier Reef is one of the things tourist come to see and I don’t think they would want to look out onto the beautiful Reef and see big mining cranes scooping up mud and gunk. If they continue mining all of the speices of Fish, Seahorses, Sharks, Starfish, Turtles and more would be distroyed. They should Not dig up the Great Barrier Reef for GOLD or anything.

    I think that they should STOP mining at the great barrier reef because the sea life and endagered species will die and because the great barrier reef is also a famous attration and if there is no sea life then the Great Barrier reef will never be the same ever ever again.

    I think it is bad that they are destroying the great barrier reef for mining because there is lots of wild life on the great barrier reef .
    There are other places in the world other then there so they should of done it somewhere else where they would not be destroying the wild life.
    They should think about what they are doing before they do it because it is killing all the fish and sea animals.

    I think they shouldn’t be mining in the great barrier reef because they will destory all of the coral and the fish that are getting diseases of the mining. So that’s why I think they should stop mining in the sea.

    This vid made me think and got me wondering how bad this issue could get . The Goverment are are bieng greedy and they dont now how important the Great Barrier Reef is to the wildlife. I think this is terrible and they should stop right now because if they keep going could be a big hole.

    the great barrier reef is a great place to vist and i would love to go there one day but i don’t think people would want to go if it was ruiened. all the mariene life are beautiful in the great barrier reef and it wouldn’t look the same with out it!

    I believe that it isn’t a good thing to do it’s very bad idea I think!
    The great Barrier reef is a great place and a tourist place for people to come look at the beautiful fish and all sorts of creatures wouldn’t want to reck that. Don’t want to reck the inviroment would you! SAVE THE GREAT BARRIER REEF!

    I believe that they should DIFFENTLY not mine near the Geat Barrier Reef. With all the big ships and gas it could corse terrible harm to the beautiful species of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef one of Australia’s beat sight seeing landmarks will no longer have the same reputation as before. All the tourist that come to see this AMAZING Reef will no longer come because of it’s sick and no longer beautiful fish. They will all be dead.

    I think that they should NOT mine near the Great Barrier Reef because I know that it is a beautiful place and that it is one of Australias best sight seeing places but if they mine there it will all be destroyed and no-one will want to come and visit the reef. Also most of the rare and beautiful fish that can only be found there will all die of all the gas. I am DEFFINATELY AGAINST this decision.

    A book I recomend for people is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid serieas it is really funny and a great way to get better at reading and writing it is alslo a really great way to spend a rainy day inside. This book I recomend for 9 to 13 year olds or any person who is at that age of reading.

    as environment leader i think it is horrible to even think of destroying the Great Barrier Reef so I strongly disargree to the destroying of the biggest Reef in the world.
